The Greens returned to league action for Matchday 9 and it was a match that they will quickly need to forget as we succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Mosta.
It was a very disappointing and half-hearted performance for the boys in green and although the Greens held the lion’s share of possession they left the match with nothing to show for it especially when considering that Mosta had a player sent off in the first half.
Mosta struck twice in stoppage time of both halves and didn’t steal anything as they stuck to their game plan even with 10 men and frustrated the champions time and time again and then punished some lackluster defending with two well crafted counterattacks.
Mosta goalkeeper Mafoumbi had a brilliant game with a number of good saves although the Greens should’ve done much better in a couple of occasions from point blank range.
On 43 minutes Mosta were reduced to ten men as Clayton Failla was given his marching orders for two bookable offences but just before the half ended, Bojan Kaljevic put Mosta ahead when a through ball by Tulimieri sliced through the Greens’ defence and Kaljevic kept his cool to put the ball behind Akpan.
The script didn’t change in the second half with Mosta now with ten men happy to soak up the pressure although their job was made considerably easier with some lackluster and careless passing not helping the Champions’ cause.
It was no surprise that on the seventh minute of stoppage time, Mosta closed the affair with a fine shot by Sciberras from outside the box.
Man of the Match as chosen by journalists was Mosta’s Bojan Kaljevic, whilst the Greens are back in action on Sunday 6th December against Valletta at the National Stadium with kick-off at 15:00hrs.
With the derby looming the Greens need to regroup and big improvement in performance is needed as the games will now be coming thick and fast with five games coming up until the end of 2020.
