The Greens continued their inconsistent spell in the BOV Premier League when meeting Old Firm rivals Sliema Wanderers and succumbing to the fourth defeat in the opening ten games of the season.
Following the impressive win against rivals Valletta the previous weekend, the Greens had a week to prepare for this game as the midweek game against Tarxien was postponed. However it turned out to be a drab performance and the team was a shadow of what it showed in the previous encounter.
Overall in its mediocrity it was a balanced affair with neither team having the superiority but whilst Sliema score one of the few chances created, the Greens with all the possession only managed to muster one shot on target during the whole game.
The first half was a dull affair with only two shots to note, one for each team. Cisotti almost surprised keeper Akpan with a shot from distance which hit the side of the upright before going out. Just before half time came to only shot from the Greens as Arias fed Keqi but his angled shot was easily saved by Grech.
The second half started with Sliema nailing the one and only goal of the encounter when a freekick from the left from Cisotti surprised Akpan and went in in the top corner to the shock and surprise of many.
The Greens tried to put together a response but it was Sliema who threatened to double their lead with a couple of counterattacks spearheaded by Farrugia.
In the end the late efforts were not enough and Sliema comfortably held on to their advantage to go back on top of the table.
For the Greens it is a game to quickly forget as the games keep coming thick and fast with games against Hamrun and B’Kara respectively still to come before the Christmas break.
Man of the Match as chosen by journalists was Sliema’s goalscorer Juri Cisotti whilst the Greens are back in action on Saturday 19th December against Hamrun at the National Stadium with kick-off at 14:00hrs.
