The Greens made it two wins in a row as a dominant first half set the tone for the 2-1 win against high-fliers Gudja Utd.
It was an assured performance by the boys in the first 45 minutes in which we scored two goals and it could’ve been more to make the game beyond reach in the first half. This win puts the Greens back in contention one point behind leading duo Hibs and Gzira.
Gudja were coming in the game on the back of positive results in their first five games but the Greens showed their intentions from the start with a dominant first half and an attentive second half in which we protected the lead but also created more clear cut chances to put the game beyond doubt.
Coach Potenza effected two changes from the win against Senglea with Ini Akpan regaining his place in the starting line up whilst Marcelo Dias was preferred to Alex Cini at right back.
The Greens started strongly and after seven minutes off a Diego Venancio corner, Nicola Leone hit the crossbar. These was just the prelude to the goal which came three minutes later when Diego Vencancio fired a powerful freekick that was slightly deflected to send the Gudja goalkeeper the wrong way for a 1-0 deserved advantage.
The boys continued to press and on 38 minutes from a Diego Venancio corner, Jurgen Pisani headed home to double the lead. Two minutes later Keqi almost closed off the contest when off a formidable counter attack from a Gudja corner, Venancio picked Keqi who went passed his defender and fired just wide to the side.
In the second half, Gudja came into the game more however we were always in control and in fact created more chances to put the game beyond Gudja’s reach on multiple occasions.
Gudja were rewarded for their determination when deep into stoppage time Aidan Friggieri drilled the ball with a perfect header from an Imanol Gonzalez cross. Gudja had one last desperate chance but Messias freekick from the side flew high over the bar.
