72 hours after the European fatigues against FC Flora, the Champions were back in action in Matchday 2 of the BOV Premier League against Hibernians.
Hibs who were coming from a 3-1 opening day defeat at the hand of Sliema Wanderers were the most clinical of the two sides and in the end won 3-1.
The Greens were in the game for most of the match but ultimately failed to make the possession and chances pay off as fatigue looked to take its toll on the boys who nevertheless produced a gallant effort.
Hibernians showed their intentions from the start and were happy to sit back in defense and hit on the counter-attack and that proved to be the winning key to the game.
It was in one of the first counter-attacks in fact that Hibs broke the deadlock as Jose Wilkson picked Rundell Winchester who quickly transferred the ball to Ayrton Attard who a low cross towards Gabriel Artiles who stabbed home.
The Greens’ response arrived four minutes later when Jan Busuttil, saw his thumping drive hitting the upright.
Four minutes later, we went close again we were awarded an indirect free-kick from inside the area which Thiago Fonseca shot just over the bar.
Hibs remained a threat with their breaks and on 31 minutes Jurgen Degabriele put Grech through and he rounded Cassar and let the ball fall into the path of Wilkson who fired wide in front of an open goal.
After the interval, the Greens kept pressing forward and on 52 minutes had a golden opportunity to level matters. Flavio Cheveresan intercepted a poor pass by the Hibs defenders but his shot was saved by Calleja Cremona.
And we paid dearly for that miss as a minute later Hibs doubled their lead. Grech sent a vertical ball towards Degabriele who went past his marker and fired the ball in the roof of the net.
A few minutes later we kept on pressing and got back into the match on 57 minutes when Jan Busuttil our best player on the night whizzed his way past Artiles and hit a curling shot that flew into the far corner.
On 62 minutes however Hibs restored a two goal cushion as Wilkson was upended inside the area and from the resultant penalty Grech score to make it 3-1.
Cheveresan had another chance on 70 minutes when he broke inside the area, but he saw his shot blocked by the sliding Ferdinando Apap and four minutes later it was Venancio who let fly a thumping drive that was pushed away by Calleja Cremona. After that Hibs held on to their advantage to register their first win of the campaign
